VR Digital Tourism and Innovation
Digital tourism and innovation occupy a prominent place in the strategies for developing the tourism sector
in Jordan, as they are essential axes that contribute to enhancing the Kingdom's competitiveness as a global
tourist destination. By expanding the use of modern technology and innovations, Jordan can reach a wide
global audience, which contributes to achieving the goals of the Economic Modernization Vision.
In an interview with the Jordan News Agency "Petra", tourism experts called for focusing on developing
tourism products and visitor experiences through virtual tours and interactive applications, which enhances
the attractiveness of tourist sites and makes them more suitable for young generations, who benefit greatly
from technological development. They said that thanks to Jordan's long history and unique geographical
location, the opportunities available to promote tourism through digital innovations are constantly
increasing, calling for the importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors, and enhancing
the capabilities of students in the fields of tourism and management, to ensure achieving sustainable
results that place Jordan in a prominent position on the global tourism map.
Director General of the Jordan Tourism Board, Dr. Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, stressed that digital tourism and
innovation are two main axes in the Board’s strategies that aim to support the tourism sector and enhance
the Kingdom’s position as a global tourist destination, noting that the Board seeks to enhance the digital
transformation in tourism marketing by providing interactive digital platforms and developing websites and
smart applications, which makes it easier for visitors to discover tourist sites in Jordan. This strategy
includes effective marketing via social media through innovative campaigns targeting different segments of
tourists. Dr. Arabiyat added that the use of modern technologies such as virtual reality and augmented
reality can contribute to providing tourists with a unique experience, as they can interact with sites
before actually visiting them, pointing to the importance of innovation in developing tourism content that
includes high-quality promotional videos and interactive lists such as digital maps and virtual tours that
provide accurate information about archaeological and tourist sites, in addition to providing interactive
stories and experiences that encourage tourists to share their experiences, which enhances interaction with
Jordan’s tourism brand and strengthens partnerships with technology companies.
Ibrahim Al-Nabali, an expert
in innovation and tourism development, pointed out the importance of promoting digital tourism and
effectively exploiting available opportunities, stressing the need to support partnerships between the
public and private sectors to develop tourism infrastructure and encourage investments in this field.
Al-Nabali explained that training tourism workers on the necessary skills is only a step towards achieving
the vision of economic modernization, by creating training programs to develop their skills. As a
contemporary example of the need for such innovation, Al-Nabali pointed to the marketing of the recently
opened Church of the Baptism of Jesus Christ using virtual reality technologies and 360-degree images,
allowing visitors from all over the world to interact with the details of the site, and enhancing its
position as an important tourist destination in the context of religious tourism. Al-Nabali stressed the
need to establish incubators for tourism innovation to help transform creative ideas into applicable
projects, noting that there are more than 3,000 tourism students with innovative ideas. He also stressed the
importance of the role of the Ministry, the Tourism Promotion Authority, and the Chambers of Commerce in
supporting innovation, as the tourism sector represents 15% of the gross domestic product, which reflects
the importance of attracting investments and thus reducing unemployment.
Dr. Mona Al-Slaihat, Head of the
Department of Tourism Management at the University of Jordan, stressed the importance of archaeological
diversity in Jordan, as the number of discovered archaeological sites exceeds 100,000, which provides a
strong foundation for tourism promotion operations. She explained that the Department of Tourism Management
seeks to prepare qualified human cadres to meet the needs of the labor market through a comprehensive
educational environment, thus developing students’ skills to work in various fields such as digital
marketing and event management. She pointed out that the department will launch the “Tourism Hackathon”
initiative during the second semester entitled “The Future of Jordanian Tourism through the Eyes of Youth:
Tourism and Empowerment”, which is a training program and competition that aims to develop students’ skills
in the field of tourism entrepreneurship and encourage them to innovate and create. She explained
