Peripheral IV Injection VR Nursing Simulation
The learner performs a complete peripheral IV injection on a virtual adult patient: identity check, hand hygiene, tourniquet placement, vein selection on the forearm or hand, skin antisepsis, cannula insertion at the correct angle, flashback confirmation, catheter advancement, tourniquet release and secure fixation before delivering the prescribed IV push medication.
Learning objectives
By the end of this experience the learner can:
- Select an appropriate vein and insertion site on the virtual patient.
- Insert the cannula at the correct angle and confirm flashback before advancing.
- Flush, secure and label the line according to standard practice.
- Administer an IV push medication at a safe rate and observe the patient response.

Procedure steps
- Verify patient identity and explain the procedure.
- Perform hand hygiene, apply the tourniquet and palpate a suitable vein.
- Clean the site, stabilise the vein and insert the cannula bevel up.
- Confirm flashback, advance the catheter and withdraw the needle into the safety device.
- Flush with saline, secure with a transparent dressing and document the insertion.
Assessment
The scenario records site selection, angle of insertion, sharps handling and the sequence of steps, and reports a score with the errors highlighted for instructor review.
Equipment and setting
Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
