IC engine, Gas Turbine and Automobile Lab

Single- and multi-cylinder engine test rigs, a turbojet model and a full set of automotive systems – gearboxes, clutches, steering, brakes and fuel systems – for engine testing and vehicle technology training.

IC engine, Gas Turbine and Automobile Lab

Overview

The IC Engine, Gas Turbine and Automobile Lab combines engine testing with vehicle-systems training. Learners draw valve-timing diagrams on sectioned engines, run load tests and build heat-balance sheets on single- and multi-cylinder engines, and use a turbojet model to understand air-breathing propulsion.

The automobile section adds working gearboxes, clutches, steering and brake systems, fuel systems and complete engine units for dismantling and assembly, so learners connect engine theory with the way a vehicle is built and maintained. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete IC engine, Gas Turbine and Automobile Lab, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.

Key Equipment

Engines and propulsion

  • Sectioned petrol and diesel engines – valve-timing diagrams
  • Petrol engine test rig – load test and heat balance
  • Morse test rig (multi-cylinder petrol engine) – indicated power and mechanical efficiency
  • Single-cylinder four-stroke SI engine with electrical loading – performance testing
  • Gas-turbine turbojet model – working of jet propulsion

Vehicle systems

  • Carburettors and multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) – fuel-system operation
  • Working gearboxes: synchromesh, torque converter and differential – power transmission and control
  • Steering system models – directional control
  • Clutches: single-plate, centrifugal and one-way freewheel – torque transfer
  • Hydraulic power brake system – braking operation
  • Complete engine units, crankshaft-piston assembly and gearbox with differential – dismantling and assembly practice
  • Tyre and wheel assembly – tyre construction and wheel alignment

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Draw the valve-timing diagram of an engine from its operating cycle.
  • Analyse gas power cycles and their modifications.
  • Calculate engine performance parameters and prepare a heat-balance sheet.
  • Explain how engines and gearboxes work.

Career Relevance

The lab prepares learners for automotive engineering, vehicle maintenance, engine testing and propulsion-related work.
