Theory of Machines Lab Equipment

Mechanisms, gear trains, governors, gyroscopes, balancing and vibration rigs that let learners see and measure kinematics and dynamics instead of only calculating them.

Theory of Machines Lab

Overview

The Theory of Machines Lab brings kinematics, dynamics and vibrations to life. Learners assemble and observe kinematic chains and their inversions, follow the motion of cams and gear trains, measure governor and flywheel behaviour, and study balancing and vibration on instrumented rigs.

Because every experiment pairs a working model with measurement, students practise analysing, testing and explaining mechanical systems – the core of machine design and troubleshooting. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Theory of Machines Lab Equipment, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.

Key Equipment

Mechanisms and gears

  • Four-bar linkage, quick-return and oscillating-cylinder mechanisms – kinematic chains and their inversions
  • Reciprocating engine mechanism model – slider-crank motion
  • Spur gear trains (one, two and three stages) and helical gears – speed ratios and gear geometry
  • Epicyclic and planetary gear trains, internal gear and pinion drive, cycloidal gear model – compound and epicyclic train analysis
  • Belt drive model – power transmission by belts

Dynamics and control

  • Cam analysis apparatus and cam-and-follower set – follower displacement, velocity and jump
  • Coriolis acceleration apparatus – Coriolis component of acceleration
  • Universal governor apparatus – governor characteristics and sensitivity
  • Flywheel energy apparatus – kinetic energy storage and speed fluctuation
  • Gyroscope apparatus – gyroscopic couple and precession
  • Centrifugal clutch – speed-dependent engagement
  • Digital tachometer – speed measurement

Balancing and vibration

  • Static and dynamic balancing apparatus – balancing of rotating masses
  • Reciprocating-mass balancing apparatus – primary and secondary balancing
  • Universal vibration testing machine – free, forced and damped vibration
  • Whirling of shafts apparatus – critical speed of shafts
  • Bifilar and trifilar suspensions – moment of inertia of bodies
  • Spring vibration apparatus – undamped spring-mass vibration

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Identify kinematic chains and demonstrate their inversions with real mechanisms.
  • Analyse simple, compound, epicyclic and differential gear trains and explain gyroscopic effects.
  • Distinguish the roles of a flywheel and a governor with practical examples.
  • Calculate balancing masses for rotating systems and assess damped and undamped vibration of a spring-mass system.

Career Relevance

Hands-on work with these machines prepares learners for mechanical design, maintenance engineering and research.
