Sheet Metal Shop
Layout, cutting, bending, seaming, riveting and soldering of thin sheet into trays, funnels and ducts using stakes, snips and hand shears.

Overview
The Sheet Metal Shop teaches learners to turn flat sheet into useful three-dimensional products. They mark out developments, cut by hand and machine, bend and fold, groove and bead, and join parts with seams, rivets and solder.
These operations are the basis of work in HVAC ducting, automotive bodies, enclosures and appliance manufacturing. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Sheet Metal Shop, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.
Key Equipment
- Stakes: bick-iron, horse, pipe and rail – forming and shaping over a support
- Straight and bent snips (10, 12 and 18 inch) – cutting straight lines and curves
- Hand shearing machine – straight cuts in thicker sheet
- Flat hammers and mallets – bending and planishing without marking the sheet
- Soldering irons – soldered joints
- Dividers, steel rules, try squares and wire gauge – marking out and checking thickness
- Saws – cutting sections and profiles
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- Describe sheet-metal tools and operations and their uses.
- Read sheet-metal drawings and develop layouts for fabrication.
- Mark, cut, bend, fold, groove, seam, rivet and solder sheet metal.
- Make simple products such as funnels and trays with the right tools and techniques.
Career Relevance
Sheet-metal skills lead to work in HVAC, automotive, aerospace and appliance manufacturing.
