Fitting Shop
A bench-work shop for measuring, marking, sawing, filing, drilling, tapping and assembling metal parts by hand to drawing tolerances.

Overview
The Fitting Shop is where learners first shape and assemble metal parts by hand. They read simple drawings, measure and mark out the work, then cut, file, drill, tap and fit components together while learning about fits and tolerances.
Manual fitting builds the accuracy, patience and tool discipline that every later workshop and lab depends on. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Fitting Shop, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.
Key Equipment
- Bench vices and drill vice – secure work-holding
- Files: flat, square, round, half-round, triangular and rasp – shaping and finishing
- Hacksaw frames – cutting stock to size
- Ball-peen and cross-peen hammers, chisels – chipping and forming
- Centre, letter and number punches – marking and identification
- Taps, dies and die handles – cutting internal and external threads
- Drilling machine – drilling and reaming
- Surface plate, try square and measuring tape – marking out and checking
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- Explain the principles and procedures of basic fitting work.
- Use hacksaws, files, chisels, scribers, punches, hammers, taps, dies and vices correctly and safely.
- Carry out filing, marking, drilling, reaming, tapping, threading, cutting and assembly tasks.
- Read simple engineering drawings and produce fitting jobs to them.
Career Relevance
Fitting skills underpin careers in maintenance, assembly, tool-making and manufacturing.
