Plant Growth & Research Rooms

Purpose-built rooms for plant science

Plant growth and research rooms are insulated walk-in facilities that reproduce a defined climate for large numbers of plants. Each room type is configured for a task: germinating seed, raising seedlings, accelerating breeding generations, simulating heat, frost or drought, rearing insects, culturing plant tissue, studying pathogens, vernalising crops, growing in vertical plant factories or conserving germplasm. Universities, agricultural research centres, breeding companies, gene banks and ministries use them for work that the field cannot deliver reliably. ASFAN supplies, installs and supports these rooms and helps specify the layout and systems.

ASFAN supplies, installs and supports walk-in plant growth and research rooms for universities, research centres and ministries across Saudi Arabia.

Building Systems

All parameters can be customized to the research programme.

Enclosure & Thermal Insulation

A customizable carbon steel shell with stainless steel panels and a polyurethane insulation core shields the room from outside temperature and humidity swings, with high flame retardancy and compressive strength.

Vertical Growing Racks

Corrosion-resistant cultivation racks and plant growth trays, built to the room size, with adjustable shelf height and individually adjustable lighting on each shelf. A mobile platform assists phenotyping and plant handling.

Illumination Control

Light intensity from 0 to 100,000 lux using suspended high-intensity LED grow lights, planar grow panels or customized light sources, with multispectral modulation to match the spectrum to each crop and growth stage.

Temperature & Humidity Control

Temperature control from 5 to 40 °C, with cooling capability down to −20 °C, and humidity from 50 to 95 % RH. Stability of ±1 °C and ±7–10 % RH, with programmable cycles from 0 to 99.

Air Circulation

Internal circulation, ducted airflow, rack air ports and air curtains for zonal separation distribute temperature, humidity and air evenly, removing micro-environmental differences between cultivation areas.

Irrigation & Nutrient Supply

Optional automated irrigation and nutrient mixing for hydroponic, aeroponic and substrate-based cultivation, with online monitoring of nutrient solution pH and EC and real-time preparation of the solution.

Plant Phenotyping & AI Monitoring

Optional AI-assisted RGB or multispectral imaging tracks seed germination, seedling growth, leaf colour and chlorophyll, plant morphology and stress responses non-destructively, across treatments and genotypes.

Gas (CO2) Control

Controlled exchange of fresh air regulates CO2 concentration in the room, with bottom air intake and top exhaust for efficient airflow management and stable gas conditions during experiments.

Central Control Software

PLC-based control with a PC interface integrates all systems on one platform, with programmable environment settings, remote access and control, automated alerts, power and surge protection, research data management and continuous 24/7 operation.

Uniform conditions across the room

Internal air circulation, ducted airflow and rack ports keep temperature and humidity even on every shelf, so plant position does not distort experimental results.

Programmable day and season cycles

Temperature, humidity and lighting follow programmed cycles, letting researchers recreate diurnal patterns, seasons or stress events and repeat them exactly in later trials.

Data-driven phenotyping

Optional imaging tracks germination, seedling growth, leaf colour and plant structure without harming the plants, producing objective, time-stamped measurements across treatments and genotypes.

Long-term security of research

Continuous 24/7 operation, automatic alerts, remote access and power protection safeguard plants and stored material during nights, weekends, holidays and power disturbances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which room type do we need?

Start from the main protocol. Germination and nursery rooms suit early growth, speed breeding rooms suit generation advance, stress rooms cover heat and frost studies, and germplasm facilities provide cold, dry storage. Many institutions combine two or three types.

Can one room cover several research programmes?

Yes, within limits. A controlled environment climate room with a wide temperature, humidity and light range can host different trials in sequence. Where trials must run at the same time, separate rooms or partitioned zones are more practical.

What site preparation is required?

The room needs a level floor, adequate electrical supply, space around the enclosure for condensing units and, where irrigation is included, water supply and drainage. ASFAN reviews the site with you before the layout is finalised.
