Pulse Rate VR Nursing Simulation
The learner palpates the radial pulse of the virtual patient with two fingers, counts for 30 seconds and multiplies by two (or a full minute if irregular), and assesses rate, rhythm and strength before recording.
Learning objectives
By the end of this experience the learner can:
- Locate the radial pulse correctly.
- Count accurately for the appropriate interval.
- Assess rhythm and amplitude as well as rate.
- Recognise tachycardia, bradycardia and irregularity.

Procedure steps
- Position the patient's arm and locate the radial artery.
- Apply light pressure with the index and middle fingers.
- Count the beats for 30 seconds, or 60 seconds if irregular.
- Note rhythm and strength.
- Document and compare with the previous reading.
Assessment
The timer and count are compared with the patient's actual simulated heart rate.
Equipment and setting
Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
