Plant Phenotyping & Crop Measurement

Instruments that turn plant traits into numbers, from kernel size and thousand-grain weight to photosynthesis, leaf area, canopy cover and root architecture.

Plant Phenotyping & Crop Measurement

Measuring how plants grow and perform

Plant phenotyping equipment measures the traits that breeders and crop physiologists select for. Image-based systems count and size kernels and corn ears, chlorophyll meters estimate leaf nitrogen status, leaf area meters and canopy analysers quantify light interception, and photosynthesis, transpiration and sap flow meters show how plants use carbon and water. Stem strength testers assess lodging resistance and root scanners describe root length and architecture. Breeding programmes, agricultural research centres, universities and ministries use these instruments in field trials and greenhouses. ASFAN supplies, installs and supports phenotyping equipment and helps specify complete crop research laboratories.

ASFAN supplies and supports plant phenotyping equipment for breeding programmes, universities and research centres across the UAE.

Selecting better varieties

Objective measurements of kernel traits, thousand-grain weight, leaf area and stem strength let breeders compare hundreds of lines consistently and select for yield and stability.

Drought and heat tolerance

Photosynthesis, transpiration and sap flow readings show how genotypes respond to water stress and high temperature, a priority for crop improvement in arid regions.

Nutrient status in the field

Chlorophyll meters give an instant, non-destructive estimate of leaf greenness, helping agronomists judge nitrogen status and time fertiliser applications more precisely during the season.

Root and canopy research

Root scanners and canopy analysers describe the hidden half of the plant and its light capture, supporting studies on water uptake, planting density and crop architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the kernel analysis systems?

The full systems combine dedicated imaging hardware and software for high-throughput counting, sizing and thousand-grain weight. The economical system uses a phone and light board for smaller workloads, while scanners and overhead cameras suit detailed seed imaging.

Are leaf area measurements destructive?

Not necessarily. Handheld and portable scanning meters measure leaves while they remain on the plant, and camera-stitching systems image leaves non-destructively. Bench methods that require detached leaves are also available for laboratory work.

Can these instruments be used in the field?

Many are portable and battery-powered, including chlorophyll, photosynthesis, transpiration, leaf area and canopy meters. Imaging systems for kernels and roots are normally used in a laboratory after samples are collected.
