Weaning VR Nursing Simulation
The learner assesses readiness to wean, performs oral care and suctioning when the patient coughs with thick secretions, switches to a spontaneous breathing trial, monitors respiratory rate, tidal volume, saturation and comfort, and decides whether to continue or return to full support.
Learning objectives
By the end of this experience the learner can:
- Apply readiness-to-wean criteria.
- Perform endotracheal suctioning and oral care safely.
- Monitor a spontaneous breathing trial and recognise failure criteria.
- Communicate findings to the medical team.

Procedure steps
- Check sedation level, oxygen requirement and haemodynamic stability.
- Suction secretions and reassure the patient.
- Start the spontaneous breathing trial with pressure support.
- Monitor rate, volume, saturation and work of breathing for 30 minutes.
- Report the outcome and prepare for extubation or resume support.
Assessment
Suctioning technique, monitoring intervals and the weaning decision are scored.
Equipment and setting
Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
