Peripheral IV · Experience 02
Peripheral IV Drip VR Nursing Simulation
This experience focuses on setting up and running an intravenous infusion through an existing peripheral line. The learner spikes the fluid bag, primes the giving set without air, connects it to the cannula, sets the drip rate from the prescription and monitors the infusion site for infiltration or phlebitis.

Learning objectives
By the end of this experience the learner can:
- Prepare an IV fluid bag and giving set aseptically and prime the line.
- Calculate and set the correct drip rate from the prescribed volume and time.
- Connect and secure the line to the peripheral cannula.
- Recognise early signs of infiltration, occlusion and phlebitis.
Project Video
Watch the Peripheral IV Drip experience recorded inside the ASFAN VR nursing simulator.
Procedure steps
- Check the prescription, fluid type, expiry and patient identity.
- Spike the bag, fill the drip chamber and prime the tubing to remove air.
- Connect the primed set to the cannula hub and open the roller clamp.
- Adjust the rate to the calculated drops per minute and confirm free flow.
- Inspect the site, document the start time and set the next observation.
Assessment
Drip-rate accuracy, air-in-line errors and site checks are logged automatically and summarised at the end of the session.
Equipment and setting
Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
