Peripheral IV Drip VR Nursing Simulation

This experience focuses on setting up and running an intravenous infusion through an existing peripheral line. The learner spikes the fluid bag, primes the giving set without air, connects it to the cannula, sets the drip rate from the prescription and monitors the infusion site for infiltration or phlebitis.

Learning objectives

By the end of this experience the learner can:

  • Prepare an IV fluid bag and giving set aseptically and prime the line.
  • Calculate and set the correct drip rate from the prescribed volume and time.
  • Connect and secure the line to the peripheral cannula.
  • Recognise early signs of infiltration, occlusion and phlebitis.
