Subcutaneous Injection VR Nursing Simulation

The learner administers a subcutaneous injection such as insulin or heparin into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm of the virtual patient, choosing between a 45° and 90° angle based on the needle length and the amount of subcutaneous tissue, and rotating sites correctly.

Learning objectives

By the end of this experience the learner can:

  • Choose an appropriate subcutaneous site and rotate sites for repeated doses.
  • Pinch the skin and insert at 45° or 90° as indicated.
  • Inject without aspiration for insulin and heparin.
  • Recognise lipohypertrophy and bruising as reasons to change site.

Procedure steps

  1. Confirm the medication, dose and site rotation record.
  2. Clean the site and pinch a fold of subcutaneous tissue.
  3. Insert at the correct angle and inject slowly.
  4. Withdraw, apply light pressure without rubbing and dispose of the sharp.
  5. Document the site used for the next rotation.

Assessment

Angle selection, site rotation and needle handling are scored, with feedback on bruising-prone technique.

Equipment and setting

Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
