Respiration Rate VR Nursing Simulation
While appearing to continue the pulse check, the learner observes the virtual patient's chest rise and fall, counts respirations for 30 seconds and notes depth, rhythm and effort.
Learning objectives
By the end of this experience the learner can:
- Count respirations without alerting the patient.
- Assess depth, rhythm and use of accessory muscles.
- Recognise tachypnoea, bradypnoea and abnormal patterns.
- Document accurately.

Procedure steps
- Keep the fingers on the radial pulse to avoid changing the patient's breathing.
- Observe one full inspiration and expiration as one breath.
- Count for 30 seconds and multiply by two.
- Note depth, effort and any abnormal pattern.
- Record the result.
Assessment
The count is checked against the simulated respiratory rate and abnormal patterns must be identified.
Equipment and setting
Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
