Forestry Instruments

Field instruments for measuring tree height, growth and slope, mapping survey routes and detecting internal decay in living trees without felling them.

Forestry Instruments

Measuring forests, parks and urban trees

Forestry instruments support forest inventory, afforestation monitoring and tree risk assessment. Laser hypsometers measure tree height and distance, increment borers and hammers extract wood cores to read age and growth rate, slope goniometers record terrain, thickness gauges measure bark and wood samples, and GPS track recorders document survey routes and plot locations. Stress-wave tomography maps internal decay and cavities in standing trees without cutting them. Forestry departments, environment ministries, municipalities managing urban trees, national parks, universities and research centres use these tools in the field. ASFAN supplies and supports forestry equipment and helps specify complete survey kits.

ASFAN supplies and supports forestry instruments for forestry departments, municipalities, parks and universities across Qatar.

Forest inventory

Height, diameter and plot location data feed volume and biomass estimates, allowing agencies to track forest resources, carbon stocks and the success of planting programmes.

Growth and age studies

Increment cores reveal annual rings, giving researchers tree age and growth rates that reflect climate, water availability and site management over many years.

Urban tree safety

Stress-wave tomography shows hidden decay inside trunks, helping municipalities decide which trees in streets, parks and schools need pruning, support or removal.

Afforestation and rangeland projects

GPS tracking and slope measurement document planting sites and terrain, supporting planning, reporting and long-term monitoring of greening and land restoration projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stress-wave tomography damage the tree?

It is considered non-destructive. Small sensors are attached around the trunk and gentle taps send sound waves through the wood. Slower wave speeds indicate decay or cavities, which the software shows as a cross-section image.

How is tree age measured without felling?

An increment borer is screwed into the trunk to extract a thin core of wood. The annual rings on the core are counted and measured to estimate age and growth rate, and the small hole is left to heal.

What is a practical starter kit for field surveys?

Many teams begin with a laser hypsometer, an increment borer, a dial thickness gauge, a slope goniometer and a GPS track recorder. Tomography is added where tree risk assessment or heritage tree management is required.
