Laboratory & Life Science Equipment

Sample Digestion & Kjeldahl Analysis

Equipment for digesting samples in acid and determining nitrogen and protein in food, feed, grain, soil, fertiliser and plant tissue.

Sample Digestion & Kjeldahl Analysis

Reference protein and nitrogen analysis

Sample digestion and Kjeldahl equipment performs one of the most widely used reference methods in agricultural and food laboratories. Samples are digested in concentrated acid on a temperature-controlled block or heating plate, the acid fumes are captured and neutralised, and an automatic Kjeldahl analyser distils and titrates the digest to report nitrogen and crude protein. Programmable graphite and aluminium heating plates also prepare samples for metal analysis. Feed mills, food control laboratories, grain quality laboratories, soil and fertiliser laboratories and universities use this equipment daily. ASFAN supplies, installs and supports it and helps specify complete digestion areas.

ASFAN supplies, installs and supports Kjeldahl analysers and digestion equipment for food, feed and soil laboratories across Qatar.

Protein content of food and feed

Kjeldahl nitrogen multiplied by a protein factor gives crude protein, a key value for feed formulation, food labelling and the pricing of grain and oilseed meal.

Soil and plant nitrogen

Total nitrogen in soil and plant tissue guides fertiliser recommendations and supports research on nitrogen use efficiency, an important factor in sustainable production.

Preparation for metal analysis

Programmable heating plates digest food, plant and soil samples in acid to release metals before atomic absorption analysis, with controlled temperature profiles for repeatable digestion.

Safer handling of acid fumes

Fume collectors and neutralisation devices capture and neutralise acid vapours from digestion, protecting staff, laboratory equipment and the building's exhaust system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many samples can be processed at once?

The digestion block offered holds eight tubes per run, and the analyser with a 40-position autosampler can distil and titrate a full batch unattended, which suits laboratories with high daily sample loads.

Is Kjeldahl still needed if we have an NIR analyser?

Yes. Kjeldahl is a reference method used to calibrate and verify NIR predictions for protein. Laboratories that rely on NIR for routine screening still run Kjeldahl on reference and check samples.

Graphite or aluminium heating plate?

Graphite plates resist acid corrosion and heat evenly, making them well suited to open-vessel acid digestion. Aluminium plates are economical for general heating where acid exposure is limited.
