CAD/CAM Lab
From CAD model to CNC part: a networked lab that combines 3D modelling, CNC programming and simulation with real CNC lathe and mill practice and an introduction to automated manufacturing.

Overview
The CAD/CAM Lab teaches the complete digital-manufacturing chain. Learners build geometric and solid models, write CNC part programs and APT programs, and simulate machining before cutting real parts on CNC turning and milling machines.
The lab also introduces automated manufacturing – flexible manufacturing systems, automated storage and retrieval, guided vehicles and industrial robots – so students see how individual machines become a connected production system. The room is networked and air-conditioned for comfortable, collaborative work. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete CAD/CAM Lab, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.
Key Equipment
Design and programming
- CAD workstations (25+) on a LAN – for drafting, modelling, simulation and programming
- Cloud CAD (e.g. Onshape) – parametric 3D modelling and collaborative design
- C++ programming environment – geometric transformations and Bezier-curve generation
- CNC simulation software – create, test and optimise CNC programs before machining
Machines and automation
- CNC lathe – turning operations, tool paths and cutting-parameter selection
- CNC milling machine – milling, slotting and surface finishing
- Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) – automated material handling
- Industrial and educational robots – motion control and pick-and-place
- Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) – computer-integrated, flexible production
- Printer and projector – for drawings and demonstrations
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- Describe the scope and fundamentals of CAD, CAM and CNC technology.
- Use CAD techniques to generate curves and solid models.
- Write basic CNC part programs to control machine tools.
- Explain automated material handling and advanced manufacturing systems in an industrial setting.
Career Relevance
Graduates of this lab are ready for roles in CNC programming, advanced manufacturing and product development.
