Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Lab

A CAD lab for curve and surface programming, 2D/3D transformations and advanced 3D modelling, supported by physical machine-component models and interactive displays.

Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Lab

Overview

The Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Lab develops expertise in CAD modelling, geometric transformations and advanced drafting. Learners program curves and transformations themselves, then use professional CAD to build solid models and understand data exchange between CAD and CAM systems, with an introduction to finite-element analysis.

Real mechanical components on the bench give every model a physical reference. The lab is networked and air-conditioned for comfortable collaborative work. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Lab, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.

Key Equipment

Computing and software

  • CAD workstations (25+) on a LAN – 3D modelling, rendering and computation
  • Cloud CAD (e.g. Onshape) – parametric and collaborative modelling
  • C++ programming environment – graphics primitives, Bezier curves and transformation matrices

Component models

  • Rigid flanged coupling – shaft-coupling design
  • Cotter and knuckle joints – fastening and joint analysis
  • Piston assembly and bearings – reciprocating motion, fits and rolling elements

Teaching tools

  • Projector and interactive LED display – live demonstrations and design reviews
  • Printer – for drawings and assessment

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Use basic C++ graphics commands to draw lines and circles and understand screen limits.
  • Program smooth parametric curves (Bezier curves) for a given set of control points.
  • Apply transformation matrices to translate, rotate, scale and reflect 2D objects.
  • Build 3D models with loft, extrude, revolve, sweep, mirror and pattern commands.

Career Relevance

The lab develops design proficiency for careers in mechanical design, automotive engineering and industrial product development.
