Metrology and Instrumentation Lab
A precision-measurement lab with surface plates, gauges, comparators, a profile projector and a toolmaker's microscope for dimensional inspection, angle and thread measurement.

Overview
The Metrology and Instrumentation Lab teaches learners to measure, inspect and control the dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts. They work with basic and advanced instruments to make precise measurements, calibrate against references and analyse measurement error.
These are the everyday tasks of a quality department, so the lab connects directly to inspection, calibration and manufacturing-quality roles. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Metrology and Instrumentation Lab, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.
Key Equipment
- Surface plate – a flat reference for accurate measurement
- Profile projector – magnified inspection of profiles and dimensions
- Toolmaker's microscope – high-accuracy measurement of small parts and threads
- Vernier height gauge – precise vertical measurement
- Vernier calipers – internal, external and depth measurement
- Micrometers – measurement of small dimensions
- Vernier bevel protractor – precise angle measurement
- Slip gauges – length standards for calibration and set-up
- Sine bar – accurate angle measurement with slip gauges
- Snap gauge – fast go/no-go dimensional checks
- Comparator – detects very small dimensional variations
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- Use vernier calipers and micrometers correctly.
- Measure angles with a sine bar, slip gauges and a bevel protractor.
- Measure threads with a floating-carriage micrometer, toolmaker's microscope and profile projector.
- Describe surface characteristics and explain why surface texture matters.
Career Relevance
Metrology skills open careers in quality control, inspection, calibration and precision manufacturing.
