Industry Supported Labs

Industry-standard facilities – an HVAC&R skill centre, a precision metrology lab and an additive manufacturing lab – that bring current commercial equipment into engineering training.

Industry Supported Labs

Overview

Industry-supported labs close the gap between the classroom and the job. Each facility is built around the same equipment that technicians and engineers use in the field, so learners train on real commercial systems and instruments rather than simplified models.

ASFAN plans and equips three typical facilities of this kind, individually or together: an HVAC&R skill development centre, a precision metrology lab and an additive manufacturing (3D printing) lab.

Facilities and Equipment

HVAC&R skill development centre

  • Inverter and non-inverter split air conditioners – installation, commissioning and fault finding
  • Cassette air-conditioning units – ceiling-mounted commercial systems
  • VRV / VRF multi-split systems – variable refrigerant flow design and controls
  • Ducted (sky-air) units – ducted commercial air conditioning
  • Deep freezers – commercial refrigeration practice
  • Air purifiers – indoor air quality

Precision metrology lab

  • Digital calipers 0–300 mm and 0–600 mm (0.01 mm) – linear measurement of small and large parts
  • Outside micrometers 0–25 mm and 25–50 mm (0.001 mm) – high-accuracy external measurement
  • Digital height gauge 0–1000 mm (0.01 mm) – height and step measurement on a surface plate
  • Dial test indicator (0.002 mm graduation) – flatness, run-out and alignment
  • Digital universal bevel protractor and digital inclinometer – angle measurement
  • Feeler (thickness) gauge set 0.05–1 mm – gaps and clearances

Additive manufacturing lab

  • FDM 3D printers – layer-by-layer fabrication of complex geometries
  • CAD workstations – design, optimisation and print preparation
  • Post-processing tools – support removal and finishing

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Install, commission and troubleshoot inverter, split, cassette and VRV/VRF systems.
  • Apply energy-efficient practice and smart controls in HVAC&R.
  • Perform dimensional inspection and geometric-tolerance checks with precision instruments.
  • Design lightweight, optimised parts and produce them by 3D printing with minimal material waste.
  • Prepare for industry employment, competitions and entrepreneurial projects.

Career Relevance

Training on industry-grade equipment raises employability and supports curriculum enrichment, staff development and stronger links with industry.
