Machine Shop
Lathes, shaper, milling machines, grinders, gear hobbing and EDM for hands-on practice in conventional and non-traditional machining.

Overview
The Machine Shop gives learners practical experience of precision machining. They turn cylindrical and tapered parts on lathes with single-point tools, produce flat and contoured surfaces on a shaper, and carry out cutting, slotting and drilling on vertical and horizontal milling machines.
Grinding, gear hobbing and electric discharge machining (EDM) complete the picture, from sharpening tools and finishing flat surfaces to cutting gear teeth and machining complex shapes in hard metals. ASFAN designs, supplies, installs and commissions the complete Machine Shop, with operating manuals, experiment sheets and instructor training.
Key Equipment
- Lathe machines with single-point cutting tools – turning, facing, taper turning and threading
- Shaper – flat and contoured surfaces by reciprocating cutting
- Vertical milling machine – face milling, pockets and drilling
- Horizontal milling machine – deep cuts, slots and large flat surfaces
- Gear hobbing machine – generating gear teeth
- Surface grinder – precision finishing of flat surfaces
- Tool and cutter grinder, bench grinder – sharpening and edge finishing
- Electric discharge machine (EDM) – complex shapes in hard materials
- Power hacksaw – cutting bar stock
- Workshop microscope – inspecting tool wear and surfaces
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- Explain the working principles and mechanisms of common machine tools.
- Describe and analyse the geometry of a single-point cutting tool.
- Make components using different machine tools.
- Evaluate cutting forces in turning by experiment or calculation.
Career Relevance
The shop provides the machining foundation needed in manufacturing, tool-room and maintenance careers.
